Enhanced NL 511 Update Now Available

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure today released an updated NL 511 service, with enhancements including improved map features, new customized notifications and hands-free audio alerts.

NL 511 provides up-to-date information to help residents and tourists make better-informed decisions before they travel. The service, available in mobile app and desktop versions is now available for download. Existing users do not need to re-download the app, as they will receive notification that an update is available through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

With these updates, users can:

  • Create an account to receive text notifications or e-mails on traffic incidents and road closures;
  • Configure routes and notifications on My511 using the desktop or mobile app;
  • Enter their destination in the mobile app and receive up to three route options with corresponding travel times, and get hands-free audio alerts for your selected route;
  • Create a list of their favourite traffic cameras to view what is happening on the road in real time; and
  • Gain hands-free access to highway and ferry information using a new interactive voice response on the NL 511 phone system.

NL 511 is a free traveler information service operated by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. NL 511 provides near real-time highway, ferry and traffic information to drivers to help them safely plan their route. This includes information on ferry delays, winter road conditions, construction activities, wreckhouse wind warnings, incidents and road closures.

With these new enhancements, ferry updates will still be available for NL 511 App users. However, users will have to update their ferry service settings if they wish to receive push notifications.

The app is free to download by both iPhone and Android users. Users can find the app by typing NL511 in the search field of their app store or by clicking the applicable link:

NL 511 travel updates are also available via telephone by dialing 5-1-1.
