The Honourable Tony Wakeham, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the Honourable Chris Tibbs, Minister of Social Supports and Well-Being and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans, and the Honourable Pleaman Forsey, Minister of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands, and MHA for Exploits, is pleased to announce an additional $400,000 investment in Budget 2026 for the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor, delivering on a commitment to strengthen end-of-life care for residents and families in Central Newfoundland.
Minister Tibbs and Minister Forsey have been strong advocates for the Lionel Kelland Hospice and for ensuring residents of Grand Falls-Windsor and surrounding communities can access compassionate, high-quality care close to home.
The Lionel Kelland Hospice provides specialized, around-the-clock end-of-life care focused on comfort, dignity, pain management and quality of life in a home-like setting.
The additional $400,000 provided through Budget 2026 builds on the Provincial Government’s annual funding of $2.3 million for the Hospice, bringing total provincial funding to $2.7 million in 2026-27.
The additional funding will allow the Hospice to continue to:
- Provide compassionate end-of-life care for people who no longer require hospital services but can no longer be supported at home.
- Support families navigate grief and loss through bereavement programs, counselling, education and dedicated family spaces.
- Relieve pressure on hospital resources by providing appropriate community-based care.
The partnership between the Provincial Government, the Lionel Kelland Hospice and NL Health Services demonstrates the important role community-based organizations can play alongside publicly funded health services to improve access to care.
The investment reflects the Provincial Government’s commitment to better health care for all of us, including ensuring that geography is not a barrier to receiving quality care.
