How to Order a Marriage Certificate Online

Vital Statistics has birth, marriage and death records from 1892 to the present. Please contact our office at: (709) 729-3308. For records prior to 1892, please contact the provincial archives (the Rooms) at (709) 757-8088.

How to Order a Marriage Certificate Online

You may use this service to complete a marriage certificate order online for events that have been registered in Newfoundland and Labrador. To use this service please visit the Vital Statistics Division – Online Services.

How to Order a Marriage Certificate by Mail

You may apply for a marriage certificate by sending a completed application (549 KB) form to Vital Statistics Division.

To enhance the privacy and security of a person’s identity, entitlement restrictions apply for marriage certificates. See “Who is Entitled” section below.

As well, persons applying for marriage certificates are required to provide identification:

  • one piece of photo ID; or
  • two pieces of other ID, at least one of which contains signature or address.

Who is Entitled to Apply for a Marriage Certificate

  • The person is at least 19 years of age.
  • Either party to the marriage.
  • A designated person who has known the person making the designation for at least one year and has signed a statement to that effect in the form set by the minister.
  • Satisfies the registrar general that they are acting on behalf of or employed by a government, charitable or non-profit organization providing social support or social services to the person making the designation and has signed a statement to that effect in the form set by the Minister.
  • A person with an order from the court.
  • When one or both parties to the marriage is deceased, the Registrar General may issue a certificate of marriage or certified copy of registration of marriage to the child, parent or executor or administrator of the deceased party’s estate, or to another relative of the deceased party where there is no child or parent (proof of death is required).

Be sure to include the following information:

  • Name of both parties to the marriage
  • Sex
  • Birthplace
  • Date and place of marriage
  • Your complete mailing address and telephone number, and state your relationship to the person named on the certificate if, for any reason, you are not that person.
  • Photocopies of IDs

Marriage certificates are only available in long form, framing size and cost $35, or $30 online. Cheques or money orders should be made payable to the Newfoundland Exchequer Account. If you are paying by credit card, we accept only Visa and MasterCard. We require the name of the card holder, card number, expiry date and signature of the cardholder.
