[COVID Alert App] What to do if you’ve been exposed to COVID-19

Learn more about COVID Alert from the Government of Canada at the COVID Alert webpage

If you’ve been notified by COVID Alert, follow these steps to take care of yourself and protect others.

Step 1: Get tested

Self-isolate and please complete the online self-assessment and testing referral or contact 811 for an assessment and to arrange COVID-19 testing.

Step 2: Get your test results.

It could take a couple of days to get your test results, you must self-isolate until you receive your results. You can check your test results online. If you test positive, you will get a call from public health.

It is not necessary for others in your household to be tested, unless they also received a notification or were instructed to do so by a public health official.

Step 3: If your test is positive – self-isolate

If you test positive, you will get a call from a public health official who will:

  • Tell you how long you must stay home and self-isolate;
  • Ask you for a list of your close contacts;
  • Follow up with each of your contacts and tell them what they should do (such as get tested or self-isolate); and,
  • Provide you with a key that will allow you to anonymously notify other app users you’ve been near.

Step 4: If your test is negative – stay safe and monitor for symptoms

If you test negative and were not given specific advice to self-isolate, please:

  • Take precautions (such as physical distancing, wearing a mask or face covering and washing your hands often) to stay healthy;
  • Stay up to date on current Public Health Measures; and
  • Monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and complete the online self-assessment and contact 811 if you’re feeling unwell as you may need to be tested again.
