Departmental Overview
The Department of Environment and Climate Change supports the environmental sustainability of municipalities, communities and regions. It is responsible for environmental protection and enhancement through implementing water resource and pollution prevention regulations and policies, as well as coordinating environmental impact assessments of proposed development projects and managing impacted sites.
The Department also supports facilitation of the settlement of collective agreements, providing dispute resolution services, appointing arbitrators, and providing workplace training. In addition, the Department ensures compliance with minimum terms and conditions of employment.
Mandate
The Department of Environment and Climate Change mandate is to advance the environmental sustainability of the province. The department consists of three branches: Environment, Labour and Climate Change.
Lines of Business
The Department of Environment and Climate Change is organized into three branches:
- Environment Branch is responsible for the divisions of Water Resources Management, Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assessment.
- Labour Branch is responsible for Labour Relations and Labour Standards.
- Climate Change Branch is responsible for climate change and energy efficiency initiatives, policy and strategic planning matters and natural areas responsibilities.
