Hope Brook Mill Complex

British Petroleum Canada (BP) opened the Hope Brook mine in 1988. In May 1991, the mine was closed due to financial and continued environmental problems. In July 1992, Royal Oak Mines Inc. (ROMI) reopened the mine. Mining and milling activities ended at the site in August 1997 due to reduced ore reserves. In 1999 Royal Oak went into receivership and ownership of the mine was ordered by the courts to be transferred to the Province. At the time, no reclamation work had been done at the site. From 2002 to 2004, the Province oversaw extensive reclamation work at the site, including the placement of waste rock and tailings under water cover to prevent generation of acidic runoff, demolition of existing structures, close out of the landfill, and various other minor works.

IOCC Open Pit

Iron Ore Company of Canada’s Carol Project, at Labrador City, mines approximately 38 million tonnes of crude iron ore per year from which 17 million tonnes of concentrate, and 21 million tonnes of tailings are produced. Of that concentrate, approximately 4.5 million tonnes are sold and the remainder is used to produce 12 million tonnes of pellets. Concentrate is produced using physical processes, except for some low silica concentrate which is produced through by flotation. Effluent is produced by mine dewatering and flow from Wabush Lake into which tailings and flotation plant effluent are discharged. Bunker C is used to fuel the boilers and indurating (pellet) machines. Emissions are produced by the crushers, stockpiles, boilers, dryers and dust generated by exposed tailings.

Wabush Mines

Wabush Mines’ Scully Mine, at Wabush, mines approximately 17.5 million tonnes of crude iron ore per year from which 6.3 million tonnes of concentrate, and 11.2 million tonnes of tailings are produced. The concentrate is produced using physical processes and then dried. Effluent is produced by mine dewatering and flow from Flora Lake into which tailings are discharged. Bunker C is used to fuel the boilers and concentrate dryers, which are equipped with scrubbers. Emissions are produced by the crushers, stockpiles, boilers, dryers and dust generated by exposed tailings.
