Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent proposes to install and operate a demonstration wind plant consisting of six 65 kW wind turbines and ancillary equipment interconnected to the Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro utility grid. The turbines will be installed on 25 meter high, freestanding, lattice towers at distances of 75-150 meters and are horizontal axis turbines with three blades and a rotor diameter of 15 meters. The diesel plant controller will be modified to integrate the wind plant with the existing diesel plant. The area occupied by the wind plant will consist of approximately 2.5 hectares adjacent to the Town of Ramea’s community water reservoir with each turbine fenced with a 1.8 meter high chain link fence. Construction is expected to commence in September with the wind-diesel control system to be commissioned in December 2003.

  • July 15, 2003 – The undertaking was registered.
  • September 2, 2003 – The Minister announced that the undertaking is released from further environmental assessment subject to the provision that a bird monitoring program must be prepared and and submitted for the Minister’s approval prior to construction taking place.
  • November 10, 2003 – Bird Monitoring Program Approved.
