Nomination Guidelines

The Public Service Award of Excellence is the highest honour an employee can receive from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Open to all employees, this award highlights excellence and outstanding job performance at both individual and team levels. It celebrates the exceptional work, commitment and creativity of employees who are making a notable contribution to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Employees are asked to nominate any fellow employee or team demonstrating exceptional work performance. Recipients are selected for their overall achievements. These guidelines are intended to help focus your thinking when completing the nomination form. They are not all-inclusive nor are they intended as categories.

Service Delivery Excellence

  • Gives service beyond clients’ expectations, looks to understand the needs of the client and recommends actions to address these needs.
  • Accomplishes results beyond normal expectations which support government and/or departmental priorities.
  • Increases client satisfaction.
  • Increases operational and financial efficiency.
  • Provides consistent, high quality reliable service; is accessible to the client; provides efficient timely responses and is willing to go the extra mile.
  • Displays respect, consideration and overall helpfulness that goes far beyond the norm in the performance of daily duties.

Leadership

  • Anticipates future trends and events and works with others to develop strategies to meet future challenges.
  • Positively influences people by demonstrating leadership.
  • Successfully deals with complex and challenging issues including the scope of work, risk, creativity, technical and/or organizational difficulty, resource limitations, timelines, and lack of models to follow.
  • Values people by recognizing the importance of others, both as individuals and as team members.

Innovation

  • Uses original and creative ideas to make improvements and/or develop and initiate new approaches.
  • Improves performance by doing things that may be unique, leading-edge, or new to the public sector.
  • Acts in a way which generates breakthrough ideas, fresh perspectives and new opportunities.
  • Achieves cost and/or time savings (or both) in the short term and/or long term.
  • Changes the organizational culture or the traditional approach to management or problem solving.

Relationship Building

  • Achieves stated objectives by enhancing existing working relationships and/or developing new working relationships.
  • Demonstrates exceptional ability to work with others by anticipating needs and expectations and initiating joint problem solving.
  • Builds relationships to support actions and contribute to program/policy advancement at the overall departmental and government-wide level.

When completing your nomination provide information that demonstrates excellence in the performance of tasks associated with the individual’s or team’s work or project. In addition, show how this work has had a positive impact upon either the work environment or the quality of service delivery to clients.
