Minister’s Message

As Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture, I extend my sincere wishes for a safe and successful 2020-21 hunting and trapping season.

The information contained in the 2020-21 annual Hunting and Trapping Guide is provided for the benefit of hunters, trappers and those who enjoy our wildlife resources and ensure they have the most up to date information about various hunting and trapping seasons, regulations, and programs that are designed to support wildlife conservation and management.

Our Government recognizes the value of knowledge and input of hunters and trappers and traditional Indigenous cultures to help make responsible wildlife management decisions and we remain committed to future engagements with all those who have a vested interest in wildlife.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all hunters, trappers and the public for their recent input on policies and legislation that will contribute to improved opportunities for safe and responsible hunting and trapping for the 2020-21 hunting season.  These changes include:

  • Aligning Season Dates for All Moose Management Zones on the Island;
  • Permitting Crossbows for Hunting in Newfoundland and Labrador; and
  • Permitting use of Smaller Caliber Rifle/Ammunition (.17 rimfire) for hunting and trapping in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The 2020-21 big game season will also see reintroduction of the Jawbone Collection Program in support of ongoing scientific research and study of our province’s big game populations. All hunters participating in this important initiative can receive a ‘Cooperating Hunter Crest’ as a reward to acknowledge their stewardship efforts.

The privilege of having access to such an abundant array of wildlife and truly remarkable wild places here in Newfoundland and Labrador is something we must not take for granted.  I encourage everyone to bear this in mind and to always closely follow safety and hunting regulations when heading into the outdoors with family and friends this hunting season.

Sincerely,

Honourable Elvis Loveless
Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture
