- Description and Primary Use
- Investigation of autoimmune thyroid disease (>95% Sn and Sp for Graves Disease). Especially useful in pregnancy (just before 3rd trimester) in women with Graves’ disease to predict the likelihood of fetal Graves’. Also use to assess proptosis in a patient with no previously known thyroid disorder, and where a thyroid scan gives a mixed picture that does not clearly distinguish Graves’ vs. multinodular goiter. Not needed for diagnosis where a thyroid scan and uptake have been done faster to make the diagnosis. With pregnancy, while lactating, and after recent iodinated contrast, a TRAB level is needed for diagnosis because the scan and uptake cannot be done.

Avoid high biotin doses (>5 mg/day) for 8 hours prior to testing. Testing cannot be performed on samples from patients undergoing sodium heparin treatment.
