- Description and Primary Use
- Fetal fibronectin is produced at the boundary between the amniotic sac and the lining of the mother's uterus and is thought to help maintain the integrity of this junction. Testing vaginal fluid for fetal fibronectin is used to help predict short-term risk of premature delivery. Fetal fibronectin should not be detectable between 22 and 35 weeks of pregnancy. Elevated levels during this period reflect a disturbance at this junction and is associated with increased risk of preterm labor and delivery.
