- Description and Primary Use
- Potassium is the major intracellular cation. Extracellular potassium levels are carefully regulated by kidneys under the influence of aldosterone. Decreased excretion of potassium in acute renal disease and end-stage renal failure are common causes of prolonged hypokalemia. Renal losses of potassium may occur during the diuretic phase of acute tubular necrosis, during administration of nonpotassium sparing diuretic therapy and during states of excess mineralocorticoid or glucocorticoid.
