- Description and Primary Use
- PSA is a glycoprotein produced by the prostate gland. Normally, very little is secreted in the blood. Increases in glandular size and tissue damage casued by benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis or prostate cancer may increase PSA levels in blood. In patients with previously diagnosed cancer, PSA testing can be used as an indicator of response to therapy and as an indicator of recurrence.
