- Description and Primary Use
- Sodium is the major cation of extracellular fluid. It is responsible for almost half the osmolality of plasma and therfore plays a central role in maintaining the normal distribution of water and the osmotic pressure in the extracellular fluid compartment. Measurement of urine sodium excretion is useful for assessing acid-base balance, water balance, water intoxication and dehydration.

24 hour urine collection. If urine samples are cloudy or turbid, centrifuge before use.
