Demerit Point System

Check your accumulated demerit points online at MyGovNL.

Newfoundland and Labrador uses the Demerit Point System. Drivers who increase risk of harm to themselves and others by breaking the law may have their driver’s licence suspended.

  • Drivers earn Demerit Points for moving violations.
  • If you are convicted of an offence while driving in the Province, or any other Canadian jurisdiction, the appropriate number of points will automatically be added to your record.
  • You can get a ticket, and accumulate points, without being stopped by a police officer.

Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Drivers

  • You will be notified in writing when you have accumulated six points.
  • You will be given another written warning when you have accumulated nine points.
  • If you earn 12 points within a two-year period, your driver’s licence will be suspended.

Class 5I, 5II, 6I, 6II Drivers

  • You will be notified in writing after you’ve earned three points.
  • A Novice driver can only accumulate six points within a one-year period before their licence is suspended.

Driver’s Licence Suspension – Demerit Points

  • The first time that you accumulate your maximum points limit, your driver’s licence will be suspended for two months.
  • If your licence is suspended a second or third time, you will lose your licence for four months.
  • The penalty for driving while suspended is an additional suspension of four months the first time, and nine months for subsequent offences in a five year period.

Points Reduction Course

  • It is possible to have points removed from your record.
  • If you are eligible, when you receive your warning, complete a point reduction course.
  • Up to four points can be deducted where an eligible driver completes the course.
  • This course can only be completed once every five years.
  • The fee for any driving course is the responsibility of the driver.
  • For more information contact Driver Records Section

How to Get Your Driver’s Licence Back (Reinstatement)

  • You can contact Motor Registration to have your driver’s licence reinstated after the entire suspension period has expired.
  • Motor Registration cannot, under any circumstances, return your licence before the suspension is over.
  • You must complete responsible driver workshop (a suspended driver’s course). This can be completed during your suspension or just before your reinstatement.
  • You must pay the reinstatement fee as per the fees policy

Points accumulated for any offence are automatically removed two years after the date of conviction.

Point Values for Convictions

The point values for convictions are available in the Schedule of the Highway Traffic Demerit Point System Regulations.
