Complete the Driver/Photo ID Application form and schedule an appointment to visit your nearest office to get a photo ID.
Motor Registration is responsible for issuing photo identification cards.
- The identification card is accepted for all purposes for which proof of identification is required under any act of this province (e.g. purchase of liquor, cigarettes, etc.)
- Canadian airlines are asking for photo identification from passengers. Always check with the airline to confirm which photo identification they will accept.
- The ID card is valid for a five year period.
What to bring to your appointment:
- You must be a resident of this province to apply for a photo identification card. Proof of address will be required. We accept the following documents as proof of your address:
- Utility bills (ex. phone, internet/cable, electricity, etc.) * no older than 2 months
- Bank statements/void cheque (with address)
- Mortgage documents
- Personal Taxes (filed in the previous year)
- Property Tax Bill
- Residential Lease/rental agreement (must be completed and signed by landlord & tenant)
- Employment Insurance or Income Support Program documents
- Employment confirmation or pay stub
- Canada Child Benefit (CCB) documents
The document must contain your full name and address.
- To apply for this photo identification card, you must also bring:
- One primary identity document such as:
- Government issued Birth Certificate¹
- Valid Canadian passport
- Canadian Armed Forces identification card
- Municipal, Provincial or Federal police force identification
- Federal Firearms identification card
- Photo identification card issued by the Motor Registration
- One primary identity document such as:
¹ if the name on the birth certificate is not your current name, you will require another original of documents such as a marriage certificate that specifies your current name.

- Baptismal certificate (with church seal)
- Marriage certificate
- Social Insurance Card
- Credit card
- School identification card (photograph: Newfoundland and Labrador schools only)
- Government identification card (Newfoundland and Labrador)
- Photo driver’s licence from another Canadian jurisdiction
- MCP card
- Health Care Board Card (Newfoundland and Labrador only)
- Other documentation satisfactory to the Registrar
- If you are married and wish to have your married name on your photo ID card, you must also produce your marriage certificate.
- You may produce two pieces of identification from the primary list but we cannot accept two pieces of ID from the secondary list.
