Impaired driving is illegal and dangerous. Alcohol and drugs impair the driver’s ability to drive safely and increase the risk of a collision.

The department continually reviews and makes changes to the Highway Traffic Act and Regulations to stop impaired driving and help motorists develop safe and sober driving habits. In anticipation of the legalization of cannabis in Canada further amendments were made to the to the Highway Traffic Act to strengthen impaired driving legislation.

These amendments built on improvements to the Highway Traffic Act related to alcohol related offences, as well other changes related to distracted driving, excessive speeding, stunting, street racing and other offences.
