The Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club has been authorized by the Provincial Government to perform the initial inspection and certification for formal classification of a vehicle as an “antique”.
In this province an “antique vehicle” is:
- a vehicle that is 25 years of age or older, maintained as nearly as possible to original with original component parts as per the attached criteria
- certified by the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club and owned as a collector item.
- operated solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other similar functions.
- used for occasional family pleasure but, in no event, for general transportation or business purposes.
- Must be Registered to an individual or museum
- Commercial vehicles Privately owned and restored for private use operated as per above articles in this section.
These vehicles are not permitted to operate on roadways without the minimum required insurance coverage.
Criteria
- if it meets all the following requirements.
- The vehicle must be a minimum of 25 years old.
- The vehicle must be as close to original as possible and in good restored or very presentable original condition ( i.e.) seats, door panels, head liner, carpets, etc. must all be in place and not worn or damaged.
- The body must be complete with no rust holes or rough patches.
The vehicle will be certified as an antique if it meets all these requirements.
An antique vehicle does not include:
- kit cars
- hot rods
- custom built, or modified vehicles
- motor homes
- Factory camper vans
- motorcycles
Modifications
Appearance of the body
Period type modifications such as continental kits or fender shirts are permitted.
There will be no alteration to the body, chassis or suspension.
Engine/Transmission
Original, as installed from the factory. In some cases, an updated drive train may be allowed, if drive train is the original type and appearance for the vehicle and has original style top pans, manifold, dome, carburetor and air cleaner. Performance built engines, torque converters or transmissions will not be approved.
Interior
Original interior, as installed from the factory, but may be converted to bucket seats and console, provided these are the correct type for that model year (e.g. a vehicle from the factory with a bench seat may be altered to bucket seats if the correct bucket seats are used).
Dashboard
Original dash with correct instrumentation. No altering of dash (e.g. cutting holes to fit gauges or modifying dash plates to take gauges). The conversion of the factory radio to AM/FM stereo is allowed provided it requires no alternation to the original dash.
Tires and Wheels
Original type of tires and wheels from the factory. These may be factory mags or period style mags of that ERA.
Custom wheel or wide tires that require cutting or altering of the wheel opening / wheel well will not be permitted.
Antique Vehicle Registration Requirements
- Proof of vehicle ownership.
- Antique vehicle application for registration and licensing completed and certified online by the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club and subject to a $25.00 admin Fee.

Abuse of Registration Privileges
The Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club monitors approved vehicles to ensure that unauthorized modifications are not made, and that abuse of the restricted licence plate does not occur.
If complaints of abuse are received then the abuser will be reported to Registrar of Motor Vehicles, re-certification or cancellation of these plates will occur.
