A vehicle can be given to an immediate family member that resides in Newfoundland & Labrador as a gift. Immediate family is a:
- husband-wife
- common law spouse (must be living together for a minimum of 12 months)
- father-mother
- son-daughter (includes step-children)
- sister-brother
- grandparents
- grandchildren
- any in-law relationship (includes common law)
A vehicle given from an immediate family member who resides outside Newfoundland & Labrador is only exempt from RST if the vehicle was owned by the immediate family member for 2 years or greater prior to the vehicle entering in the province.
To gift a vehicle to a family member:

- Visit MyGovNL to notify Motor Registration that you no longer own the vehicle.
- Complete the notice of sale on the back of the registration document and give the original to your family member (we recommend you keep a copy for your records).
- Write “GIFT” on the registration document
- Write the type of “immediate family member” the person is: husband, wife, common law spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, brother, grandparent, grandchild, in-law
- Write the date of the gift on the form
- If the vehicle is registered to more than one person (ex a husband and wife) both owners must sign the gift notice.
- The new owner must complete and sign the insurance declaration on the back of the vehicle registration. Valid insurance policy is required to register the vehicle.
Requirements:
- An inspection certificate is not required.
- If the vehicle is registered in both husband and wife’s name, the vehicle may be gifted, but both husband and wife must sign the notice of gift.
- Valid insurance is required. The new owner must complete and sign the insurance declaration on the back of the vehicle registration.
- A gifted vehicle is not subject to tax if the recipient is “immediate family”.
How to Register a Gifted Vehicle:
If a family member has gifted you a vehicle you must transfer the registration within 10 days. Submit your gifted vehicle transfer request online.
