Selling a Vehicle

Please visit MyGovNL to submit a Notice of Sale or notify of change of ownership.

When selling a vehicle privately, you must:

1. Complete a Bill of Sale:

BILL OF SALE

Bill of Sale can found on the reverse of the Vehicle Registration Document.

Seller must collect the following information about the buyer(s):

  • full legal name(s),
  • daytime phone number,
  • postal code, and
  • Driver Licence number(s) or date of birth(s).

Important: All registered owners must agree and sign the Bill of Sale

If the vehicle is sold for less than the wholesale value (as published in the Canadian Red Book), an affidavit must be signed and witnessed by both the seller and purchaser.

MRD can check the wholesale value of the vehicle if you provide your plate number or the first 10 digits of your VIN.

 2. Complete a Notice of Sale:

EXPRESS NOTICE OF SALE

Express Notice of Sale can found on the reverse of the Vehicle Registration Document. The express notice of sale can be used for vehicles sold where the new owner has a Newfoundland and Labrador Driver Licence or Photo Identification Number.

Seller must collect the following information about the buyer(s):

  • full legal name(s),
  • daytime phone number,
  • postal code, and
  • Driver Licence number(s)

EXPANDED NOTICE OF SALE

The expanded Notice of Sale should be used where the new owner resides out of province, or does not have a Newfoundland and Labrador Driver Licence Number.

Expanded Notice of Sale is available online.

Seller must collect the following information about the buyer(s):

  • full legal name(s),
  • daytime phone number,
  • full mailing address.

3. Submit Notice of Sale:

You are required to notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 10 days that you no longer own the vehicle.

A Notice of Sale relieves you as the original owner/seller of any further legal responsibilities for the vehicle, such as tickets, impound fees, etc).

SUBMIT AN EXPRESS NOTICE OF SALE

Submit your express notice of sale online using MyGovNL or send us a copy of your completed notice found on the reverse of the Vehicle Registration Document.

SUBMIT AN EXPANDED NOTICE OF SALE

Submit your expanded notice of sale to Motor Registration Division.
