Veterans Discount

Veterans can avail of an additional 10% discount for passenger vehicle registration.

For the purpose of this discount, a Veteran is any person who has honourably:

  • served in the Armed Forces of Canada, the Commonwealth or its wartime allies, for a minimum of three years (may still be serving);
  • served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime;
  • served as a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • served in a theatre of war with the Armed Forces of Canada, the Commonwealth or its wartime allies;
  • performed NATO service or Peacekeeping mission(s) with the Armed Forces of Canada;
  • serves as a Peace Officer in a Special Duty Area, or on a special duty operation; or
  • has provided verification that is acceptable to the registrar.

To apply for the veterans discount you must submit documentation that verifies your eligibility. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • Copy of NDI75 card
  • Certificate of Service
  • Military Personnel Record Resume (MPRR)
  • RCMP Record of Service Card
  • Any other official document that verifies your service

Veteran Licence Plate

Motor Registration and the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion have worked together to implement a veteran licence plate program to recognize the valuable contribution of our veterans.

  • Veteran plates may only be used on passenger vehicles, motorcycles and commercial vehicles less than 4500 kg.
  • Your regular plate, beginning A, H, J, C or M, must be kept with the vehicle.
  • If you already have a veteran plate for one type of vehicle you do not have to complete another application for additional veteran plate(s) for your other vehicle(s).

To Apply

For the purpose of this application a Veteran means any person who is serving, or has honourably served:

  • in the Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth or its wartime allies;
  • as a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • as a Peace Officer in a Special Duty Area, or on a special duty operation; or
  • who has served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime.

The Royal Canadian Legion administers the application process. Mail completed form, attachments and self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Once forms are approved by the Legion submit the form to the nearest Motor Registration office to receive your licence plate.

  • There is no initial fee for the veteran plate.
  • The registration renewal fee is the standard registration fee as per the Fees Policy

Selling or Trading Vehicle with Veteran Plate

Your regular plate, beginning A, H, J, C or M, must be kept with the vehicle when you are selling the vehicle. Remove the veteran plate and re-attach the original plate.

Your veteran plate can be re-assigned to your new vehicle by completing the application form.
