Stolen and Wrecked Vehicle Program

The Stolen and Wrecked Vehicle Program is a national program designed to ensure consumer protection and public safety by:

  • Preventing the registration of stolen vehicles using the vehicle identification number (VIN) of a vehicle written off, which is falsely declared to have been rebuilt; and
  • Ensuring the mechanical fitness of all wrecked vehicles that are genuinely rebuilt.

Your registration document will indicate if any of below “Vehicle Brands” affect your vehicle.

Vehicle Brands

Non-repairable vehicle

  • Vehicle that is incapable of operation or use on the highway and has no resale value except as a source of parts or scrap.
  • Non-repairable vehicles can be transferred, but cannot be registered for road use.

Salvage vehicle

  • Vehicle that is damaged by collision, fire, flood, accident, trespass or other occurrence to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle for operation on the highway exceeds the vehicle’s fair market value.
  • The vehicle may be transferred without proof of inspection however,
  • 3 part (body, mechanical and 4 wheel alignment) inspection will be required in order to get registration and have the salvage status changed to “Rebuilt”.

Rebuilt vehicle

  • Salvage vehicle that has been rebuilt, inspected and is safe for road use.

Stolen vehicle

  • In the event your vehicle is stolen, you must immediately notify the nearest police detachment who will notify the Motor Registration.

Vehicle Accident History

If you purchase a used vehicle, the Salvage Vehicle Post Inspection Certificate and the Damaged Vehicle Report should be found with the vehicle, along with the vehicle registration document. These are indicators that your vehicle has been involved in an accident. If you do not have these documents, Motor Registration can provide you with a vehicle history record for a fee.
