Overview
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to identify, prevent and remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities. The Disability Policy Office works with all government departments and agencies to assist in the development of policies and programs that include people with disabilities and that are barrier free.
Barriers can be physical, an attitude, a technology, an architectural barrier, a communication barrier and/or an act, policy or regulation that prevents a person from fully participating in society. There are many barriers that can get in the way when people with disabilities try to access a service, program or opportunity. The Disability Policy Office works with community organizations, businesses and other government groups to identify, prevent and remove barriers.
Under the Accessibility Act, the Disability Policy Office will:
- Support the implementation and administration of this Act and the regulations;
- Provide policy and communication support for this Act and the regulations;
- Support others to develop and implement public education and awareness on the purpose of this Act.
- Examine and review measures, policies, practices and other requirements to improve opportunities for persons with disabilities;
- Identify and study issues of concern to persons with disabilities and recommend action where appropriate; and
- Provide administrative support for the Accessibility Standards Advisory Board.
