September 9, 2022 – Homelessness Across Canada: Action Team Update

Homelessness and transiently homelessness is occurring in cities and towns across Canada, particularly in regional centres such as Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Since the pandemic there has been a rise in homelessness nationwide which may be attributed to feelings of isolation, mental health and addictions, job loss and housing shortages. For some it is rooted in intergenerational trauma, which is often expressed through mental health and addiction concerns experienced by these individuals.

Anyone can find themselves homeless. Statistics reveal that all ages and gender can find themselves in this difficult situation. Homelessness can be experienced through different kinds of housing and shelter accommodations, over a short or long period of time.

The Action Team is examining best practices for support being offered in other communities across Canada, like Yellowknife Housing First, CNH3 -Canadian Network for the Health and Housing of People Experiencing Homelessness, the Portland Hotel Society in Vancouver, the Gathering Place and Centre for Hope in St. John’s.

The Action Team will continue to work to advance solutions and supports related to homelessness and transiently homelessness in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, recognizing that it is not a one-size fits all solution.

The Action Team looks forward to providing regular updates through the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s Facebook page and website, and the Labrador Affairs Secretariat’s webpage at https://www.gov.nl.ca/exec/las/overview/
