Post-Secondary Instructor Certification

Effective March 1, 2023, the Department of Education will award a Post-Secondary Instructor’s Certificate to individuals who make application and provide evidence of completion of either of the following academic routes:

Memorial University Education Courses

Eligibility for a Post-Secondary Instructor’s Certificate will require completion of the following Memorial University Education Courses*:

  • ED 2710 – Course Organization and Development in Post-Secondary Education
  • ED 2730 – General Methods of Teaching in Post-Secondary Education
  • ED 2740 – Ethics & Professionalism in Adult and Post-Secondary Education
  • ED 3280 – Educational Assessment

and two (2) of

  • ED 2700 – Academic Literacies in Adult and Post-Secondary Learning Contexts
  • ED 2720 – Introduction to Post-Secondary Education
  • ED 2801 – The Adult as Learner
  • ED 2806 – Sociology of Adult Education
  • ED 3801 – Educational Media

* Instructors who completed Memorial University education courses under the previous Departmental policy (ED 2710; ED 2720; ED 2730; ED 2801; ED 3280; and ED 3801) prior to July 1, 2016 will have the option to complete the above combination of Memorial University courses under the revised policy in order to obtain post-secondary instructor certification, or the required courses under the previous policy.

Instructors who already possess a Bachelor of Education (Primary/Elementary) or Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary) degree are only required to complete the following Memorial University Education courses (or equivalent):

  • ED 2710 – Course Organization and Development
  • ED 2730 – General Methods of Teaching in Post-Secondary Education
  • ED 3280 – Educational Assessment (or ED 4950 – Assessment of Learning**)

** For individuals who have previously completed Memorial University’s ED 4950 (Assessment of Learning), the Department can accept this in place of ED 3280 for the purpose of post-secondary instructor certification. Please note that Memorial University does not consider these two courses to be equivalent; should individuals choose to pursue a Diploma or Degree in Post-Secondary Education from Memorial University they would be required to complete ED 3280 under the current requirements for these credentials.

College of the North Atlantic’s Adult Learning and Teaching Innovation (ALTI) program

In 2023, the College of the North Atlantic introduced a new Adult Learning & Teaching Innovation (ALTI) certificate program, which comprises 27 short courses grouped into 18 micro-credentials or ‘badges’; these ‘badges’, in turn, are organized into the following six larger courses:

  • TL 1010 – Introduction to Adult Education;
  • TL 1015 – Educational Technology;
  • TL 1020 – Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion in the Classroom;
  • TL 1025 – Teaching & Learning for Engagement;
  • TL 1030 – Assessment of and for Learning; and
  • TL 1035 – Coaching for Learning

Each of these larger courses is equivalent to a three-credit course, or approximately 45 hours of study, and can be completed in any order as they have no prerequisites.

The College of the North Atlantic is making the Adult Teaching & Learning Innovation Program courses available to all post-secondary instructors through online delivery. Individuals who complete the CNA ALTI program will be eligible for a Post-Secondary Instructor’s Certificate.

Vancouver Community College’s Provincial Instructor Development Program (PIDP) courses (Memorial University course equivalencies)

Individuals who complete the Provincial Instructor Development Program (PIDP) offered through Vancouver Community College in British Columbia are eligible to receive a Post-Secondary Instructor’s Certificate.

The courses that comprise the PIDP are listed below. Please note that Memorial University has reviewed Vancouver Community College’s Provincial Instructor Development Program (PIDP) and identified a number of equivalencies to the Memorial University Education courses that make up the Post-Secondary Instructor’s Certificate (see above).

Please note – The PIDP only provides equivalencies for five (5) of the required Memorial University courses; individuals pursuing further academic paths through Memorial University will receive academic credit for only those courses identified in the table below.

Other Information

  • Individuals who possess a Bachelor of Education (Post-Secondary) or a Master of Education degree are not required to complete additional courses towards post-secondary instructor certification.
  • Upon completion of the required courses, application for the Post-Secondary Instructor’s Certificate must be made to the Director of Literacy and Institutional Services. This application is to include the following:
    • A letter of request (email is acceptable), which states that you have completed the course and/or degree requirements from [name of post-secondary institution], and includes your current mailing address; and,
    • An official transcript from [name of post-secondary institution] which provides evidence of completion of the required courses and/or degree
