Canada Student Financial Assistance Program

Federal funding levels remain unchanged for the 2026–27 academic year

Domestic Institutions (Canada)

Beginning August 1, 2026, eligibility for the Canada Student Grant for Full‑Time Students (CSG‑FT) will be limited to students attending public and not‑for‑profit post‑secondary institutions in Canada. As a result, students enrolled at for‑profit private domestic institutions will no longer be eligible for the CSG‑FT.

This change applies only to the Canada Student Grant for Full‑Time Students. Students attending for‑profit private domestic institutions remain eligible for other federal student financial assistance, including Canada Student Loans and targeted federal grants, provided they meet all applicable eligibility criteria.

For clarity, programs with a duration of less than 60 weeks were never eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Full‑Time Students and are not impacted by this change.

Subject to final regulatory approval, a temporary blanket exemption from the measure restricting the Canada Student Grant for Full‑Time Students will apply to certain institutions that offer at least one program meeting the established exemption criteria. As a result, no student enrolled at an institution covered by this exemption will be restricted from receiving the CSG‑FT due to this measure.

This blanket exemption will be in effect for the 2026–27 academic year, from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027. A separate process will be established for exemptions applicable to the 2027–28 academic year and beyond, and details of that process will be communicated publicly in due course.

Students must continue to meet all other federal grant eligibility requirements.

International Institutions (Outside Canada)

For periods of study starting August 1, 2026, or later, students attending private for‑profit international post‑secondary institutions will no longer be eligible for federal student financial assistance, including Canada Student Loans and Canada Student Grants.

Students attending public or not‑for‑profit international institutions will continue to be eligible for federal student financial assistance, provided all other eligibility criteria are met.

To support students currently receiving federal assistance, a transition period has been established. Eligible students will remain eligible for federal student financial assistance until July 31, 2029, provided they continue in the same program at the same institution.

Please note: To receive provincial student financial assistance, students must first be eligible for federal student financial assistance. Students who are restricted from the federal program as a result of this measure will therefore also be restricted from receiving provincial assistance.
