Information management (IM), also known as records management, is an economical and efficient management system for the creation, classification, retention, storage, maintenance, retrieval, preservation, protection, disposal and transfer of government records.

Information Protection (IP) is an area of practice where the management of information converges with security policy and measures focused on the protection of information from inappropriate access or use.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) provides advisory services and support to government departments and supported public bodies to manage and protect information as part of their accountability under Section 6 of the Management of Information Act.
