Responsibilities
The Animal Health Division delivers programs and services to a variety of members of provincial society in the disciplines of veterinary medicine and food safety as well as directing a number of provincial regulatory programs governed by the Food Premises Act and the Meat Inspection Act, and subordinate regulations. In 2012 several Acts were merged under the Animal Health and Protection Act which provided greater regulation of animal welfare.

- Farm Animal Veterinary Services and associated pharmacy
- Animal disease diagnosis and food safety analysis
- Animal Disease Surveillance research and control (e.g., avian influenza, rabies, Lyme disease, Aleutian disease)
- Regulation Of Food Safety for milk (Dairy Farm Inspection Program) and meat (Meat Inspection Program)
- Support the protection and preservation of this province’s heritage animals, such as the Newfoundland Pony
- Assist other government agencies in support of their programs and services including wildlife and public health interests
