Becoming An Outdoors Woman Workshop

Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) is an outdoor education skills program for women offered by the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture in association with Friends of Salmonier Nature Park.  BOW events are offered in two formats: a traditional three-day weekend event usually held in the spring or fall, and ‘Beyond BOW’ workshops of various duration held throughout the year.

The BOW program was established in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1997. Since its inception, more than 2,000 women have participated in almost 50 events.

 BOW and Beyond Bow

While BOW weekend workshops are mainly for women over the age of 18, Beyond BOW events may be tailored to include families, such as the Becoming an Outdoors Family program.

BOW and Beyond BOW workshops are hosted at various locations in Newfoundland and Labrador. Workshops allow participants to develop outdoor recreation skills and gain insight into the province’s natural, historical and cultural resources. With guidance from experienced instructors and mentors, these sessions provide novice and more-experienced participants with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue a variety of outdoor interests.

Beyond BOW workshops build on beginner’s skills, teach advanced skills, and/or focus on one topic or skillset. Events may take place in one afternoon, over a day or weekend, or several evenings.

Core courses offered include shotgun, rifle, archery and fishing, along with a mix of other courses based on region and availability. BOW instructors ensure all participants enjoy a safe, positive, fun and educational experience.

Whether you are a newcomer to the outdoors or an aspiring outdoors woman, BOW can introduce you to a variety of outdoor activities and provide the opportunity for continued skills development.

BOW programs will operate in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions and protocols in place at the time of the event.
