Department of Justice and Public Safety, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Articling Clerk Positions – 2027-2028
Applications are invited from law school students who will graduate with an LL.B./J.D. before
June 1, 2027. Articling positions are available as outlined below for a term of one year:
- Articling positions with the Public Prosecutions Division in St. John’s, Marystown, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook, Stephenville and Happy Valley-Goose Bay
The Public Prosecutions Division is responsible for criminal and quasi-criminal prosecutions. Students who article with the Public Prosecutions Division gain meaningful courtroom experience, often independently conducting trials in Provincial Court. Students also gain skills in conducting legal research, preparing opinions, and working with victims, witnesses, and the public. The program gives articling clerks the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge, skills, and experience for practicing law.
Articling clerks receive professional guidance and support from senior counsel and enjoy a wide array of challenging legal work in an exciting work environment. To ensure compliance with Law Society requirements, all articling clerks will complete short-term placements with a private law firm and/or Civil Division. The annual salary is $77,957.95.
Applicants must be eligible for admission to the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador as a student-at-law and satisfy the Department of Justice and Public Safety’s hiring requirements. These positions are considered “Positions of Trust” and successful candidates will be subject to a background check through police/court, and other sources. To work in the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Service, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada or have written authorization to work in Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
All applications must include a cover letter, resumé, law school transcript, and contact information for three (3) references. An uploaded (unofficial) transcript will be accepted for application purposes; however, an official transcript may be required before any offer of employment.
A connection to rural Newfoundland and Labrador or an interest in practicing in those communities is an asset. Please indicate in your cover letter the locations in which you would be interested in working.
Applications should be received no later than Monday, November 30, 2026 and sent to Kim Cooper by email: kimcooper@gov.nl.ca.
Interviews will be held in December 2026 via teleconference. Thank you for your interest in our program.
