1. How does a person apply to become a Justice of the Peace?

An application must be sent to the Minister of Justice and Public Safety. However, the present policy of the government is to limit the appointment of Justices of the Peace to personnel in the Provincial and Supreme Courts.

2. Can a Justice of the Peace perform marriages?

No. In Newfoundland and Labrador a marriage ceremony may only be performed by the members of the clergy, persons who are appointed as marriage commissioners under section 11 of the Marriage Act, the Mayors of St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Corner Brook and Provincial Court Judges.
