Who is eligible to join the Plan?

The Uniformed Services Pension Plan (USPP) covers all full-time employees of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary; the superintendant, every assistant superintendant and every commissioned and correctional officer of Her Majesty’s Penitentiary and, certain employees of the St. John’s Fire Department.

Is participation compulsory?

Yes. If employed on a full-time basis with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary or any of the above noted positions with Her Majesty’s Penitentiary participation is compulsory.

Note: While there are employees of the St. John’s Fire Department in the plan, those who commenced employment after December 31, 1991 were enrolled in the City of St. John’s Pension Plan.

Are there circumstances which preclude joining the plan?

Yes. Anybody hired in a position other than specified above.

When do employees join the plan?

All eligible employees must join the plan as soon as they’re deemed eligible. This is usually the date they are hired.
