Trappers have an ethical and legal responsibility to practice humane and efficient trapping methods that minimize the amount of stress inflicted on an animal. Strict standards in humane trapping methods are recognized through the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards. This international agreement regulates performance standards for traps used in the harvest and control of 19 furbearer species, including eight species trapped in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Anyone wishing to trap furbearing animals must first apply to the Wildlife Division upon successful completion of a Trapper Education Course.
