Trapping is a traditional activity in Newfoundland and Labrador that has evolved over time to incorporate improved trapping practices based on increased knowledge and understanding of both trapping techniques and fur-bearing species.
This province is home to a range of fur-bearing species. On the Island of Newfoundland, trappers pursue species including beaver, muskrat, otter, mink, coyote, fox, ermine (weasel) and squirrel. Zones traditionally open to lynx trapping on the Island of Newfoundland are currently closed due to low lynx numbers.
In Labrador, trapped species include beaver, muskrat, otter, mink, coyote, fox, lynx, wolf, ermine (weasel), squirrel and marten. There is no open season on fisher or wolverine.
