Recruit Training Program: Adult Corrections, Department of Justice and Public Safety

The 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Adult Corrections Recruit Training Program application process is now open.

The NL Adult Corrections Division is currently recruiting candidates to complete the Correctional Officer Certificate program at the Atlantic Police Academy in Prince Edward Island.

 

All applicants must successfully complete all stages of the screening process to be considered. The Provincial Government is providing funding to reserve 12 seats for students from Newfoundland and Labrador, equivalent to half of a candidate’s tuition provided:

  • All pre-requisites are met to be selected as a recruit-in-training;
  • They commit to a two-year service agreement whereby the tuition balance upon early exit is repaid at a formula divided by the 24-month service contract;
  • Successful completion of the Atlantic Police Academy Correctional Officer Certificate program, otherwise candidates will be responsible for the full tuition amount; and
  • Candidates must sign a service contract specific to a location/correctional facility, prior to starting the Correctional Officer Certificate program at the Atlantic Police Academy

Correctional Officer Application process

Stage 1: Submit application with supporting documentation

Forward required documents to NLCorrectionsRecruiting@gov.nl.ca.

  • Cover letter and resume
  • Copy of driver’s license and abstract
  • Copy of high school diploma or transcript (post-secondary is an asset)
  • Copy of Criminal Record Screening Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check

Stage 2: Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT)

  • Medical clearance form required to participate, medical form provided upon receipt of application
  • Date and location of COPAT will be provided

Stage 3: Interview

  • Applicants will be assessed for suitability and competencies

Stage 4: Psychological and Medical Assessment

  • Successful applicants will be referred to complete assessments
  • Vision and Hearing standards apply

Stage 5: Recruit Training

  • Selected candidates notified in July 2024 to attend the Correctional Officer Certificate program at the Atlantic Police Academy commencing August 19, 2024.

Stage 6:  Recruits Hired

  • Adult Corrections provides on-the-job portion of program paid at a student hire rate
  • Graduates offered positions as a Correctional Officer with the Adult Corrections Division of the Department of Justice and Public Safety (with a 12-month probationary period)
  • Standard First Aid / CPR certificate is a condition of employment
