St. John’s, Newfoundland, 2020

This Open File release consists of a 1:50 000-scale geological map (NTS 12I/05 and NTS 12I/06; Bellburns) covering the region between Brian’s Pond in the south to River of Ponds Lake to the north, as well as a set of ancillary notes addressing aspects of map compilation, lithological features, lithostratigraphy and nomenclature. The maps incorporate field data collected in the region by the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador starting in 1983, supplemented by information gleaned from published and unpublished sources referenced in the accompanying notes. The Cambrian‒Ordovician shelf and foreland basin of the study area are located approximately midway on the Great Northern Peninsula, western Newfoundland. There, they extend west of the Proterozoic granitic and gneissic spine of the Long Range Mountains to the long, essentially straight, shoreline of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
