On February 4 1938 during a major snow storm an avalanche swept several hundred feet down the east side of Quarry Hill, in the western part of the city. It crossed the main road and struck a garage owned by a Mr. George Allen, damaging the structure of the building and moving it down the slope. The several cars within the garage were not badly damaged, and the police department chose to evacuate five houses in the area as a precaution. The Western Star advised that “Fortunately the snow-slide was not an unusually large one: if it had been several houses which were hit by it would have been wrecked, and possibly many lives lost”.
