Probably the worst recorded flood damage in Newfoundland occurred in Bishop’s Falls in January 1983. Exceptional rain fell on an above average snow-pack, and following several days of above freezing temperatures the flood resulted. The main effect was through bank erosion, and three houses were swept away. Many other houses were left in an unsafe position, and flood damage in all was estimated at $3 million. The area had no history of flooding.
