A severe and protracted winter storm resulted in large waves battering property in the Battery and to a lesser extent Quidi Vidi village. Although no residences were affected several wharves and sheds were damaged or destroyed, and others were in jeopardy as their foundations had been damaged or swept away. The Critch’s Wharf – the large fishing wharf at the very edge of the Outer Battery – was completely destroyed. In Quidi Vidi waves came over the breakwater, and the storm surge was more than three metres above normal levels. Stages, sheds and boats were destroyed.

An intense low pressure system that slowly tracked southeast of Newfoundland February 4 and 5 caused the conditions that brought high winds.
