Some homeowners in western Newfoundland discovered floating refrigerators early Monday after a flash flood moved through Trout River. Mayor Paul Matthews says ice buildup caused Manuels Brook to overflow into four homes.

“Refrigerators, freezers that are in the lower area … some were almost completely submerged or floating.” said Matthews. “Residents had to cut off power to at least two of the homes because of furnace issues. They were worried about the blowers in their furnaces.” Matthews said it was unclear Monday morning if anyone will have to leave their homes. He said residents are still assessing the damage. Matthews also said the town is taking measures to prevent more flooding in the future.
