In Conception Bay and surrounding districts an earthquake shock was felt. About one p.m. a tremendous blast was heard simultaneously at Brigus, Harbour Grace Junction, Bay Roberts, Harbour Grace, Black River, Placentia Bay and at Trinity. A constant rumbling noise was heard up to thirty seconds. Some houses at Heart’s Content were shaken. A woodman crossing a pond nine miles west of Brigus felt the ice tremble, and his horse took fright. At Clark’s Beach the earth trembled, and people ran to each other’s houses. Patrick Dooley and Aubey Spacklin were boiling their kettle at the foot of a hill near Grand Pond and were badly frightened. They quickly departed the area in fear of the hill falling on them. They said it was shaken at the time from the base to top.
