Description

The protected areas of Newfoundland and Labrador under provincial jurisdiction can be divided into seven types. They are Wilderness Reserves, Ecological Reserves, Provincial Parks, Wildlife Reserves, Wildlife Parks, Special Management Areas, and Public Reserves. These areas fall under one of the following pieces of legislation: Provincial Parks Act, Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Act, Wildlife Act and Lands Act. The boundaries for these protected areas are available for download in an ESRI shapefile format below. This file is updated on an as-needed basis. Use of this file is subject to the disclaimer found above and also in the associated metadata. Google Earth version – The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador actively participates in the Conservation Areas Reporting and Tracking System (CARTS); a national initiative designed to track and report on the status of Canada’s protected areas in a consistent, standardized, and authoritative manner. CARTS is managed by the Canadian Council on Ecological Areas and Environment Canada. Environment Canada has created a Google Earth version of CARTS.
