The Arts and Letters Awards Program

The Arts and Letters Awards Program was established in 1952 to encourage the creation of new works of art by residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Open to both established and emerging artists, each year this iconic program recognizes excellence by awarding over 60 winners for original works in visual art, literary, French literary, and music. Winners receive a cash prize ($1,000 senior – 21 years and up; $350 junior – ages 10 – 20 years old; $2,500 Percy Janes First Novel Award – 19 years and up) and have the opportunity to participate in an annual exhibition at The Rooms. All entrants receive a written adjudication by request.

The 2026-2027 Arts & Letters Awards Program will reopen for submissions on September 23, 2026.

During its 75-year history, the Arts and Letters Awards Program has played an integral role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s culture. Many artists have credited the program with impacting their work and encouraging continued creativity. As we approach the program’s 75th anniversary we look back upon the remarkable efforts of the artists who have ensured the success of the Arts and Letters Awards Program.  We look forward to celebrating this milestone with special events to be announced in 2027.

All submissions are final. Entrants may withdraw their work from the competition at any time, but no corrections or revisions to submitted works will be accepted.
