Urban Housing Starts Up Six Units in February 2026

According to data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), urban housing starts in Newfoundland and Labrador totalled 45 units in February 2026, an increase of 15.4% (or six units) compared to February 2025.

Urban housing starts in February were concentrated in the St. John’s Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), which increased by 7.7% (or three units). Housing starts in other urban areas also increased by three units in February 2026 compared to February 2025.

Housing construction is generally limited in Newfoundland and Labrador between January and March. Caution is advised in interpreting percentage changes during this period.

On a year-to-date basis, urban housing starts in the province totalled 112 units over the January to February 2026 period, an increase of 21.7% (or 20 units) compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

At the national level, urban housing starts increased by 10.2% (or 1,466 units) in February 2026 compared to February 2025 and increased by 5.3% (or 1,597 units) over the January to February 2026 period compared to the same period in 2025.
