Eating well provides you with energy and nutrients you need to stay healthy and independent. Using Canada’s Food Guide can help you make the healthiest food and drink choices you can. The guide recommends:
- Eating a variety of foods each day by making half of your plate vegetables and fruits, and the other half protein foods and whole grains.
- Making water your drink of choice.
- Limiting highly processed foods that are high in sodium (salt), sugar, and saturated fats.
There are many “diets” promoted to older adults that may not be nutritionally complete. Read more about this in Thinking About Your Weight, What About Your Health? Remember, food nourishes our body, and these fad diets may restrict certain foods. It is important to include foods from all sections of the Food Guide Plate.
