Makes 8-10 servings.

Directions:
- Heat oil on medium-high heat. Add meat and onions and cook until brown.
- Stir in carrots, turnip, barley, water, salt, pepper, and chili powder.
- Turn up heat and bring stew to a boil.
- Turn the heat down, cover, and let simmer for 1 to 1 ½ hours. Stirring occasionally.
- Serve with bannock.
Substitution:
Frozen vegetables: Use 4 cups of frozen mixed vegetables instead of fresh vegetables. Frozen vegetables do not take as long to cook, so add them about 30 minutes before the end of cooking.
