Our diverse and distinct culture richly and strongly defines our province.

The Cultural Events Fund (CEF) supports community activities such as festivals, events, and cultural projects across Newfoundland and Labrador, highlighting our unique cultural tapestry and creativity.

CEF supports public gatherings that facilitate celebration and/or preservation of local culture through presentation of, and engagement with, arts and heritage. 

FUND OBJECTIVES

  • Encourage communities to celebrate the traditional, historic, and contemporary cultural resources of their region and/or that of the province;
  • Foster recognition and inclusion of local artistic and heritage talent;
  • Raise awareness of the cultural assets and creativity of regions throughout the province; while building community strength, spirit, well-being and resilience;
  • Promote activities and gatherings that are inclusive and accessible to residents and visitors;
  • Maximize the impact of the fund contribution through community partnerships and other funding sources. 

WHO CAN APPLY

  • Not-for-profit community groups and organizations;
  • Municipalities, Local Service Districts, and Indigenous Community Organizations.

Ineligible sectors include:

  • Individuals and for-profit companies;
  • Institutions, such as places of worship, schools and libraries;
  • Organizations already in receipt of CEF or Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) funding.

ELIGIBLE EVENTS

  • Community festivals and celebrations;
  • Come Home Year gatherings;
  • Cultural skills-sharing events;
  • Significant anniversaries and commemorations;
  • Multicultural festivals and celebrations.

Ineligible events include:

  • Events that took place in the past;
  • Events already in receipt of Confederation 75 Celebration Grant funding;
  • Sports-focused events;
  • Canada Day celebrations.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

  • Application assessments are made on a first-come/first-served basis, until available funds are expended for the current fiscal year.
  • Infrastructure and/or other capital expenses are not eligible for CEF funding.

Please Note:

  • Eligibility does not guarantee an automatic right to assistance.
  • Applicants are encouraged to submit applications early in the calendar year and well in advance of the planned event.
  • Minimum grant for 2024-25: $1,000.
  • CEF Grants are awarded in the $1,000- $2,000 range. Occasionally, events (such as multi-day festivals) are funded at a higher amount. If your group is making a larger request, please contact us before submitting your application.

Please ensure your application is fully completed and signed, incomplete applications may result in processing delays. 

PAYMENT INFORMATION 

Following approval of application, a CEF grant will be issued:

  • In one payment via e-transfer.
  • To the organization identified in the application.
  • Please note that payment cannot be issued to a private individual.

FINAL REPORT

A Final Report is required after your event has taken place. Failure to submit a report may affect the ability to access funding in future.
