According to data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), urban housing starts in Newfoundland and Labrador totalled 158 units in June 2026, an increase of 30.6% (or 37 units) compared with June 2025.
Urban housing starts in the St. John’s Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) increased by 38.2% (or 42 units), while housing starts in other urban areas decreased by 45.5% (or five units) in June 2026 compared with June 2025.
On a year-to-date basis, urban housing starts in the province totalled 615 units over the January to June 2026 period, an increase of 35.2% (or 160 units) compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
At the national level, urban housing starts decreased by 13.0% (or 3,017 units) in June 2026 compared with June 2025 and decreased by 1.2% (or 1,396 units) over the January to June 2026 period compared with the same period in 2025.
