Home Heating Supplement Program (Furnace and Stove Oil) Français
The Home Heating Supplement is available to residents of the province whose adjusted family income for 2025 was $150,000 or less and have directly incurred costs for the purchase of furnace or stove oil to heat their principal residence in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Eligible households will receive a maximum supplement of $500, where adjusted family income for 2025 is $100,000 or less. A partial supplement is available to households with adjusted family income for 2025 of more than $100,000 but less than or equal to $150,000, with a minimum supplement of $200.
For most people, adjusted family income is the net income (Line 23600 of the income tax return) of the applicant plus, if applicable, the net income of that applicant’s spouse or common law partner. Adjustments to family income for special circumstances may be considered as outlined below. Applicants must have their 2025 income tax return filed with the Canada Revenue Agency prior to submitting an application.
Eligible individuals or families must apply for the supplement and provide furnace or stove oil invoices for the period from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026 in the name and address of the applicant or the applicant’s spouse or common law partner. The invoices must verify the purchase of at least 250 litres of furnace or stove oil. Households where heat is included in rent as well as fully subsidized Newfoundland and Labrador Housing units are not eligible for the supplement unless invoices to verify the minimum purchase of furnace or stove oil can be provided.
Special circumstances mean that an applicant may qualify for the supplement even if their adjusted family income for 2025 exceeds $150,000. Adjusted family income will be reduced in the following circumstances:
- where a spouse has died, only the surviving spouse’s income for the year will be used to determine eligibility;
- where a spouse resides in a long-term care facility, adjusted family income will be reduced by the amount paid to support the spouse in the long-term care facility. If the cost of long-term care is fully funded by a third party and no contributions are being made from the combined family income, then the cost of care cannot be deducted when calculating adjusted family income;
- where a person is enrolled in an Adult Basic Education (ABE) or skills training program, adjusted family income will be reduced by the amount of the payments in respect of the ABE or skills training program; and,
- where an individual becomes divorced or separated, only the individual’s income will be used to determine eligibility.
Please note that appropriate documentation will be required to support a claim under these special circumstances.
