Corner Brook Pulp and Paper

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd (CBPP) operates a pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. The mill utilizes a thermal mechanical pulping process to produce standard newsprint and other specialty newsprint grades. CBPP produces approximately 700 tonnes of newsprint per day. Steam used in the paper making process is produced for the most part by the main boiler (No.7) which combusts a mixture of Bunker C fuel, waste oil fuel, and hog fuel. Backup or supplementary boilers (No.3 and No.6) burn Bunker C fuel.

The main sources of air emissions are from the operation of the mill boilers. The primary air contaminants associated with these sources include carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, particulate matter and sulphur oxides. Boiler No.7 is equipped with mechanical dust collectors, low NOx high efficiency burners and a wet scrubber, all of which help reduce the release of contaminants to the atmosphere. Boilers No.3 and No.6 have no effective pollution control equipment. Fugitive air emissions are also associated with fuel storage in the two main storage tanks. Activated carbon filters have been installed on the storage tank vents to help reduce emissions.

Mill effluent discharges into waters of the Humber Arm (Bay of Islands) via one of two systems. The east sewer system is completely enclosed and contains non-contaminated cooling and plant waters. The combined west sewer system contains mill process effluent. CBPP utilizes an activated sludge system to treat mill process effluent. The activated sludge system consists of pre-treatment for neutralization and oil removal, primary treatment for solids removal, and secondary treatment for biological oxygen demand (BOD) reduction and toxicity removal.

AbitibiBowater Inc. – Grand Falls

On December 4, 2008, AbitibiBowater announced the permanent closure of its pulp and paper mill located in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador. Production ceased in February 2009.

AbitibiBowater Inc. – Stephenville

The AbitibiBowater, formerly Abitibi Consolidated Inc, Stephenville, (ABST) pulp and paper mill closed in October 2005. In August 2006, ABST registered its plan to permanently decommission the Stephenville paper mill under the Environmental Assessment Regulations. The Project was released from the assessment process in October 2006.
